What the law requires in an accident
For younger or first time drivers, an accident can be a traumatic event. The information on this page is designed to give you more knowledge and confidence if you find yourself in this position.
- It is illegal to leave the scene of an accident. This can be a serious offence so never be tempted to do this.
- If your car is immobile, your breakdown recovery provider or insurance company may move this for you depending on the cover you have. Make calls and see whether either company will do this for you before paying for a garage to move your car.
- Most insurers will advise you not to admit liability at the scene of an accident. This can be done later and even if another driver admits liability there and then, they can change their mind later and dispute it. Concentrate on the important things and do not concern yourself with assessing who was to blame.
- Exchange details with the other parties. By law following an accident all parties must disclose their name, address and registration number. If you are in doubt of any of the information a driver gives you at the scene of an accident, consider involving the police.
Once these immediate details have been taken care of then inform your insurance company. They will advice you on the next steps.
