Modified cars slip through the net
People are not informing their insurers of changes to their vehicles, as modified cars and imported cars are often let slip through the net.
Nationwide says that its studies have shown that nearly one in five drivers simply modify their car without passing on the information.
The practice is particularly common among young drivers, who often seek to introduce the latest trends and add-ons.
According to the survey 44 per cent UK drivers think they don't have to inform their insurer if they add alloy wheels, while 47 per cent think that tinted windows are also exempt.
Nationwide executive director Stuart Bernau said: "For many, a car is more than just a vehicle, it's an expression of personality and individuality.
"Many people spend a considerable amount of time, hard work and money modifying theirs to make it more unique. If any damage is caused to it, they are likely to want it dealt with quickly and efficiently, to restore it back to its best. It makes sense, therefore, to make sure that you've got the best insurance and that any changes you have made are fully covered."
