One day new drivers won't have to steer
New drivers could find motoring easier because they will not have to steer due to a new system being developed by Honda.
The car manufacturer claims that it is planning to launch a new self-steering vehicle that will be available in UK showrooms by 2006, reports the Times.
The car is likely to appeal to many new and learning drivers as it will have an "automatic chauffeur" that is capable of following the road and keeping a safe distance from cars in front.
"This has been in development for five years," said Graham Avent for Honda UK."It will be available from next year on some models and could be standard across all model ranges within ten years."
He added: "We see it as a way to reduce the human error involved in an accident and it could be the biggest step forward in driver safety since the airbag."
The car uses cameras to stay between road markers and a radar sensor automatically tells the car to slow down if there is another car close by.
However, drivers will not be able to feel asleep behind the wheel as the car automatically senses if the driver has removed his hands from the steering wheel.
