Tougher penalties to tackle car insurance avoidance

People who drive without car insurance should be hit with tougher penalties, according to a new survey.

Research revealed that most drivers regard the current punishment as not enough of a deterrent.

Drivers caught without insurance are often fined as little as £200, which is much less than most insurance premiums.

Almost half of Max Power readers said they would back moves to stiffen penalties to ensure that fewer drivers flouted the law.

Uninsured drivers put between £30 and £60 on the cost of every insurance premium in the country.
